Speaking by exposition

Speaking by exposition is just that, telling it like it is. It doesn’t draw a picture, for it would be description rather than exposition. It doesn’t include any chronological of events, nor would you be able to reason or draw interferences. The idea of exposition is to put forth the speech so plainly that it can’t be misunderstood. Such are purely informational speeches or scientific speech such as in the case of ‘Carbohydrates’ synthesis’ or a speech on Freud’s Psychoanalysis.

Clearness and precision are of utmost importance and that the definition shouldn’t be too excessive.
A good number of methods are used in expositional speech. Contrast & antithesis for example are used effectively to amplify definition. Next we have ‘analogy’ which calls attentions for similar relationships in objects not otherwise similar.

Classification for instance, as its name suggests classifies subjects to its respective classes or groups, such in the case of explaining the ‘cat-family’ in a typical biology class. While ‘analysis’ separates a subject into its essential parts, whether by order of time, place, increasing interest or logical order. Last but not least, generalization states a general truth as used in the explanation of an experiment’s procedures.

Whether you are using generalization method or the contrast & antithesis, be sure to understand what you are trying to convey to your audience as speaking by exposition , is just that, telling it like it is, and to put the matter so plainly and straightforward.
