Monotony, What could have gone wrong?
Your name is called and up you go to the stage, there is not much time though to hesitate and doubt about your own delivery, either you make it or break it. Period! And my advice is that, you might as well choose the former. So you summon all the courage that you have, and after much rehearsings and practices by the midnight oil, it's time to show that you have what it takes. It's show time!
And you look at your audience, many of whom are slowly dozing off, not much paying attention to you and still others are fidgeting around with their mobile phones. What could have gone wrong? You asked yourself. Why don't pay attention to yourself, listen, LISTEN to the way you speak, do you feel like dozing off also?
The most terrible form of punishment the audience have to endure is: monotony. And long enough, chances are somebody will go insane. Like hitting a piano key repeatedly or on a cymbal over and over again to produce a melody, yet many speakers never realize that they too are doing the same thing but through a different channel instead. Get the idea?
Next, how could you transform yourself from a monotonous speaker to a highly credible ones? I have introduced three techniques in order to sharpen your delivery skills, persistent enough and the victory is yours. See Word Emphasis, Changes of Pace, and Changes of Pitch.
